Just Say “NO” to Negative Press

In my last post, I explained the concept of mirrored neurons—that we are all wirelessly connected brain to brain. It’s almost as if your state of mind is contagious–a smile from you begets a smile from another, unbridled negativity begets more negativity around you, and so on. There is now scientific evidence that there really is this kind of ripple effect.

This is one of the reasons I’m especially concerned about a recent influx of what I see as negative and mean-spirited press about the profession of hotel concierge—-and sadly, it’s coming primarily from within our own ranks.  In my concierge training and recent book, I focus strongly on all of the positive aspects we enjoy in our amazing career. What a treat to help travelers make their dream trips come true! How nice is it to embrace each challenge we encounter as an opportunity to learn and grow? This is the true spirit of the hotel concierge.

Nothing exists in a vacuum, and going “to the dark side” with cynicism, reproach and complaints about our profession and our guests has a negative effect, not only on concierges, but also on our guests, the hotel industry, and those who are considering our profession as a career. It accomplishes nothing and only serves to tarnish a wonderful reputation we have worked hard to uphold.

It’s downright self-defeating, too, since mirrored neurons are felt most strongly by those closest to the source. In other words, those who are perpetuating the negative emotions are adversely effected the most and have to live in that energetic field.  No thanks! I think I’ll stay over here on the bright side with challenge, enthusiasm, making a positive difference, and all the other wonderful opportunities we have to be grateful for.
