Happiness Pays Off Big

I love my work bringing customer service training—concierge style—to organizations of all kinds. It makes me happy, and I am good at it. At a recent concierge conference, I learned from speaker,  Shawn Achor , that there is a cause-and-effect relationship at play here:  It seems I’m good at what I do because it makes me happy.

Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, spent over a decade at Harvard University, where he won numerous distinguished teaching awards for his work.  He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard, earning a Masters in Christian and Buddhist ethics.  In 2006, he was Head Teaching Fellow for “Positive Psychology,” the most popular course at Harvard at the time.  In 2007, Shawn founded Good Think Inc. to share his research with a wider population. Today, he applies the latest scientific research to deliver trainings in over 40 countries worldwide.  At the core of his work is the revolutionary finding that individual happiness and organizational success are inextricably linked, which is aptly named,  The Happiness AdvantageTM.

This begs the questions:

  • Are you happy in your career?
  • If you manage people, are they happy? How would you know?
  • How might you change your attitude about your work to make it more satisfying?
  • How might you help others find more satisfaction in their work?

I’ll continue to share some of Sean’s secrets to happiness and success (in that order!) in blog posts to come. In the meantime, smile, think good thoughts, and above all, be happy!
