I got inspired to make July the month of V’s, so enjoy Vegas, Valued, Vending, Vision and Vitamix.
My friend Dr. Toni Galardi, the Lifequake Doctor (www.Lifequake.net), always says that B. F. Skinner had it right when he said human beings need intermittent reinforcement in order to successfully move forward. In other words, people need to feel valued and appreciated in order to continually do their best. I feel so blessed to have received such acknowledgement in the form of an award from my colleagues, expressing the value people in the concierge association place on my work. It is the Oscars of my esoteric concierge world. That acknowledgement from my peers feels better than any other because they understand you like no one else can.
At the Concierge Congress in Las Vegas in April, I was presented with an International Honorary membership to UICH that I deeply appreciated. I was honored by the whole Association, Union Internationale des Concierges d’Hotels, Les Clefs d’Or, which consists of 44 sections and 3800 members worldwide, for my outstanding contributions to the Profession of Concierge. My writing and teaching both inside the profession as well as “curating” the concierge culture for global service companies and the traveling public were particularly recognized. In addition to this honor, the Les Clefs d’Or USA President Jeanne Mills announced that the USA section was making 2012-2013 “The Year of Holly” to celebrate my career. For my part, I will continue to contribute to earn that exciting distinction.
Many people have commented that it is a well-deserved honor and some thought that it should have happened years ago. I am thrilled about the award and believe the timing is beyond perfect. I appreciate any and all comments, but the ones that are meaningful to me are the ones that are specific. I like to hear how I inspired them or what exactly I said that made a difference and changed them in some way. It is deeply important for people, whether you work in an office or you work alone as I do, to be recognized and appreciated for a job well done. It keeps you motivated and inspired, especially if you understand what it was you did that mattered. Which brings me to the thought that I often hear parents say to their small children, “Good job.” If they told them exactly why they were receiving the kudos, it would be much easier for the kids to repeat it.
I noticed that Oprah has launched a Thank You campaign. I’m all for that idea, especially since my company is called Thank You Very Much Inc. It is amazing how powerful a thank you can be. The expression truly makes us feel valued, and when we feel valued we can do our best in all areas of our lives. So thank you for the value you add to my life. I encourage each of you to make those around you, at work and at home, know how much they are appreciated.
